In September 1963, the very first Porsche 911 - the spiritual successor to the 356 - instantly won the hearts of car enthusiasts when its prototype was unveiled at the Frankfurt IAA Motor Show. Revealed as the Porsche 901 (renamed as the 911 for its market launch in 1964), there have been seven generations of the model since then.

The 356 was a sports car designed by Porsche that sold from 1948 through 1964 and was Porsche's first production automobile. A prototype for the 356, the 'Number 1' had a mid-engine. The name for the 356 was chosen as it was the 356th project off the Porsche design desk. In 1949, production officially began in Stuttgart, Germany.

A lightweight rear-engine 2-door sports car available as hardtop coupe and convertible. Porsche would produce the 356 with several variations until 1963. The Porsche 356 is a sports car that was first produced by Austrian company Porsche Konstruktionen GesmbH (1948-1949), and then by German company Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche GmbH (1950-1965). It was Porsche's first production automobile.

By 1950, the Porsche 356 1100 weighed 2,425 pounds, rode on an 82.7-inch wheelbase and had an overall length of 151.6 inches. The engine still had 40hp, but used twin Solex 32BJ carburetors, and the car could reach 90 mph--quite a feat 57 years ago--yet sipped fuel at about 35 mpg. There is no way a new 911 gets even close to that mileage.

A new chapter of Porsche history was opened on Maunday Thursday 1950 when the first Type 356 was completed at the Stuttgart factory hall. Porsche traditionally gave its test vehicles nicknames. The specimen on display in the museum was christened "Ferdinand" as a 75th birthday gift to Ferdinand Porsche on September 3, 1950.
