The first generation lasted from 1964-1967, and for the first two years was only available as an option package for the Tempest LeMans. Beginning in 1966, the Pontiac GTO became a separate model, where it would stay until 1972 when it again reverted to an option package.

The desirable closed-chamber "670" cylinder heads were factory installed for the 1967 model year only. The original, but now more powerful, 400 was bolted into the restored engine bay prior to the refitting of the front sheetmetal. After the body panels were reinstalled, Jake took the GTO home to do the final assembly in his garage.

11547 posts · Joined 2008. #7 · Jan 9, 2016. That said, most 2bbl 'economy' GTO's were adult bought and adult owned from the get-go, and were not thrashed like the standard models. 50 years later, most 2bbl GTO's are in better overall shape because of this. Something to consider.
