#1 · Nov 13, 2022 normally when I dump the oil I just put a new filter on and throw in 5 quarts. This oil change I actually read the dip stick. Looks like I'm a little over full with 4 quarts. I normally change hot too so I got as much out as possible.

Jan 29, 2020. #6. So I bought a 1965 Mustang with a 289 around 1969-1970. Changed the oil to QS 10W30 in the round cans. Started it and no oil pressure. Trashed the engine. There was sludge inside the oil pump and the new detergent oil loosened enough to jam the oil pump and snap the shaft driving the oil pump.

There are differences between OIL and LUBRICANT. Mobil 1 is a new technology LUBRICANT (that is: CHEMISTRY) not OIL. My engine builder and CompetitionCams recommended Shell Rotella T, 30W OIL for my rebuilt 289 (with the Zinc additive). Believe it or not, there is a difference in engine materials from de 60's and 70's vs. today's.

Check to see if the dipstick tube has been replaced, they are very difficult to get fully seated and will cause a low oil reading on the dipstick.

Now when I change oil and filter here in MN and put in 5 quarts the dipstick shows me almost a qt low on both my Avanti 289 and my Champ 259.

#1 · Sep 19, 2003 So i did an oil change on my 1965 289 the other day. Oil level was max on the dipstick before i started. Drained the oil and got 3.5 liters out (1 gallon). Now i dont claim to know much about these cars, but to me that seemed not a lot.

Here is my 1965 - all stock except the wheels. I have the original wire spokes and bias tires to go with it. Stock 289, 54,000 miles, all original. I currently run Brad Penn Semi Syn 10w30 for the ZDDP levels. Thoughts? I tried M1 20w50 but the start up noises were horrible, so I switched back.

I have tried many different kinds of oils from: regular Castrol, Mobil, Pennzoil, Napa, Dollar store oil, Semi-Synthetic Castrol, hi-mileage oils, Full synthetic Castrol, Mobil 1 Syn, Royal Purple Syn, and Red-Line Synthetics.
