Alfa Romeo Canguro Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este


13 TZ2s were built. The first, chassis 101, was a special commission from Alfa Romeo to assess the feasibility of a road-going version. Bertone were handed the task of designing a body for the new car which was subsequently unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October 1964. Bertone's creation, the Canguro, was one of two special order TZ2s.

First shown at the Paris Motor Show 1964, the red car is a Giorgetto Giugiaro-designed Alfa Romeo concept called Canguro. Notably, Canguro is Italian for kangaroo. The man who designed this car was named Car Designer of the Century in 1999. Three years later, he was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame.

In 1964, Alfa Romeo were considering a road going version of their Giulia TZ race car, approaching both Pininfarina and Bertone for designs. At Bertone, stylist Giugiaro was tasked with the design, and came up with the gorgeous Canguro coupe. Thanks in part to a glass-fibre body, the diminutive Canguro weighed in at a remarkable 620kg.
