Even the cast aluminum valve cover for the 258 is a big cost that is avoided with a 4.0L head. Of course the later models (99-06) use a good stamped steel VC instead of aluminum, but at least it doesn't leak. You do need to keep the valve cover with the head, as the covers won't all interchange.

The AMC 258 was introduced in 1971 in J-series pickups and Wagoneers and in 1972 in CJs. It continued to be used through 1990 in the Wrangler. It is basically a stroked 232 engine. The great thing about this engine is it reliable, inexpensive, and has horse power and toque peaks at low RPM.

#1 · Jul 2, 2011 I am pondering the install of a performance cam in my 258. It has been somewhat recently rebuilt (50,000miles). It was bored out 0.060 over, I run a Chevy HEI and MC2100 carb. I do not have a header but might consider adding one if I can justify the expense.

I've got a 1977 CJ5 with a 1979 4.2L that the PO swapped. All cylinders check out at 140-145psi compression and intake manifold pressure is a constant 22.5 with no needle fluctuation.
