The Crystal Garden was designed and built in 1925 by architects Francis Mawson Rattenbury and Percy Leonard James for the Canadian Pacific Railway, which intended it as a convention and entertainment center for its Empress Hotel, which stands across Douglas Street.

The Crystal Gardens remained a public swimming pool until 1967. Since then the building has been used in a number of ways, mostly unsuccessful. My favorite use was when it was transformed into a tropical garden filled with lush jungle growth. Now it has become part of the Victoria Conference Centre and is full of delegates.

By June 1925, it was ready. Victorians were suitably impressed. Above the massive swimming pool, there was a wide promenade and a Tea Room. Huge maple-floored ballrooms anchored the building at either end, while a third ballroom doubled as a gymnasium and concert hall. The pool itself was a sight to behold.

The Crystal Gardens, owned by the Canadian Pacific Railway, has the largest glass roofed pool in North America. Besides year round swimming, the Flamingo Room and South Ballroom adjoining the pool are the centre for popular dancing in Victoria. The Royal London Wax Museum is located on the ground floor below the South Ballroom.
