The Artist: Born around 1612, little is known of Juan Bautista Martínez del Mazo's life and training prior to his marriage in 1633 to Francisca de Silva Velázquez y Pacheco, daughter of Diego Velázquez. As her name indicates, her mother was the daughter of Francisco Pacheco, a leading art theorist and painter of the previous generation with whom Velázquez had trained.
