Some people prefer acrylic to glass. Sometimes standard glass tanks will not accommodate the sump requirements. There are a myriad of reasons to use acrylic. Many reasons to use glass sumps also, and many reasons to diy the whole thing from either. Tall narrow tanks, do not make good sumps, short wide sumps won't fit in a lot of cases.

Cut a hole for the bulkhead on the side you want the water pumped into the Refugium. I used a 1/2" bulkhead, I think the size works better for the smaller size of this container. Install the bulkhead using teflon tape for a nice, tight seal. I used an elbow coming out of the bulkead and attached clear hose to that.

Im thinking of trying to convert one of them into a refugium or algae scrubber or something like that. Is this a good idea, or should I just leave them as filters?

The larger the refugium, the better. The smallest sensible size is 20% of the aquarium volume. I know of cases where the refugium had the same volume as the aquarium, or was even larger than the main aquarium. I recommend Chaetomorpha or chaeto. They grow fast, but do not grow sexually like Caulerpa sp. (which can cause problems in the aquarium).
