PJKA (SSS) Steam Locomotive No. E1016. The E1016 coal-fueled steam locomotive was a rack-railway engine built by Maschinen Fabrik Esslingen in Germany in 1920. It operated in Padang Panjang, in West Sumatra, between 1921 to 1985 transporting passengers and coal along steep mountain grades using toothed, rack rails that meshed with a cog wheel system to navigate inclines with more than a 10% grade.

One was to pull a train of 22-ton carriages (13-14) on level track at 100 kph (62 mph) and reach 70-75 kph (43.5-46.6 mph) up a 0.5% grade. Add 100 tons to the train, and the locomotive would still need to reach 90 kph (56 mph).
