Shannon learned of the Piazzale Michelangelo during her first visit to Europe back in 2004. A friend who was studying abroad in Florence at the time led her up a steep, winding path to a hilltop basilica—San Miniato al Monte (Saint Minias of the Mountain)—overlooking the city.
