Talented film director, Tetsuya Nakashima ("Kamikaze Girls" 04), wield a host of cinematic tools to make "Memories of MATSUKO" a memorably entertaining and emotionally powerful "fairytale tragedy," weaving together realistic human drama with offbeat comedy and spectacular (Bob Fosse-like) production numbers to tell the heartbreaking story of.

It's difficult to write an objective review about a movie that impressed me so much as 'Memories of Matsuko' did. This tragi-comedy by director Tetsuya Nakashima is a mix of 'Forrest Gump', 'Amelie from Montmartre' and a music-video/musical. Nakashima takes us on a rollercoaster ride of emotions and tells us the epic tale of the tragic heroine Matsuko in candy-coloured and fairy tale-like.

Thankfully I had seen "Amelie" and "Run Lola Run/Lola Rennt" before watching this. In all three films the usage of music as a prop, bold coloring, different speeds, odd and interesting angles, vivid cinematography, flashbacks, surrealism, eccentric characters, animated graphics, and other features of what I would call Expressionism, come to the fore, the entirety of the films' duration, each.

Memories of Matsuko is the lovechild of Confessions, Kamikaze Girls and The World of Kanako. When it comes to visuals, it comes close to Girls, the down spiral storytelling is reminiscent of Confessions, while the almost poetic-nihilism sounds like Kanako. But the film stands at its own.

Review by Danny Webster ★★★★½ 4. Memories of Matsuko is directed by Tetsuya Nakashima, a director whose other works Kamikaze Girls and Confessions drastically differ in style and tone yet this film sort of merges them both together (albeit Confessions was made after this) with a Japanese pop-culture confetti of colour and the slowly.
