Sweden Hills An idyllic Swedish town in Hokkaido, Japan


The Japanese town, Sweden Hills, was built after the Swedish ambassador at the time had visited the area and noted how similar the climate and landscape were to Sweden. Because of this, they started the construction of Swedish Hills in 1984, and today there are 420 Swedish-inspired houses standing in the area.

It is exciting to go through the town that is home to 500 people - a lot of which are children - and see that they have totally adopted the Swedish lifestyle, including the language. It's quite literally a slice of Sweden in the middle of Japan, and attracts many Swedish tourists who are interested in seeing how similar it is to their own.

Stepping foot into this distinct Swedish-style town located in Tobetsu, on Hokkaido Island, one is transported out of Japan and straight into another country.
