My DAC is powered by the 24 bit/192 kHz Wolfson WM8740 chipset. Audio manufacturers such as Arcam or Cambridge Audio just to name a few are also using the exact same chip in much higher priced products. So what are the obvious downsides?

There is more to the quality of a DAC than just the chip. Power supply, for one. So the answer to your question is a bit more complicated. @tparr I have an experience similar to yours I own an older Onkyo CDP that uses the Wolfson 8742 chip and a new Benchmark DAC3B that uses the ESS 9028PRO and I find the Benchmark presets more detail.

Every DAC chip has different requirements for the surrounding circuitry, so you cannot just plunk a DAC chip down in the same circuit to listen to the differences: the circuit has to be optimized to suit the requirements of each individual chip. The Wolfson 8741 is a voltage out chip, with onboard current to voltage (I/V) conversion, the ESS.

It uses a highly regarded Wolfson DAC chip, which is capable of sampling rates up to 192kHz; of course, as the sampling rate of CDs is 44.1kHz, the DAC's capability is overkill. The CD14 will also play MP3 files, but you'd need to burn those onto CDs first (there's no USB input that would allow you to play them off a USB flash drive).

The Rotel CD Player that I currently use, the RCD-1570, which has an "upgraded" Wolfson dac (the WM-8740) actually sounds a bit "metallic" and sometimes a bit "harsh", compared to the older Rotel cdp, the RCD-1520 (which doesn't specify in the cdp specs exactly what specific dac was used in this older cdp, only stating that it is a Wolfson).
