On the western edge of the town, surrounded by Hatston Industrial Estate, there is a prehistoric monument, known as the "Grain Earth House" (see Historic Scotland ). It is a short, low, stone-walled passage, deep underground, leading to a small pillared chamber.

To the west of Kirkwall Bay is the subterranean chamber known as the Grain earth-house. Located in the middle of an industrial estate, these days the visitor is hard pressed to find the structure. From the outside, it is a small, green knoll in the midst of industrial buildings.
