1983 The two millionth motorcycle rolls off the conveyor belt, this time an MZ ETZ 250. With disc brakes (drum brakes remained an option) and 12-volt electrics the MZ had reached the modern standard in motorcycle design. 1989 MZ ceases manufacture of sidecars. 1990 MZ is privatised on 18 December.

The Saturday was spent prepping my faithful 1976 MZ TS250/1 Supa 5 that I had ridden to Saxony last October for an old bike rally (see RealClassic issue 23). All seemed well, so the Trophy was wheeled into the garage in regretful disgrace and myself and the Supa 5 toddled off at 6am on the Sunday, riding through beautiful hot and sunny weather.

For most people the outstanding memory of the most successful years of MZ production is likely to be the utilitarian TS250/1, also known as the Supa 5. Introduced in 1976, featuring a five-speed gearbox, the Supa 5 had it all.

The bike itself was in very good condition for its age but a few bits were tired and when i priced up replacements it didnt seem economically viable to do a full restore so thought i would.
