BMW E9 CSL
These E9 models found a successor in the legendary 3.0 CSL. The BMW classic was a homologation special, built with a view to entering the world of motorsports. The final version of the BMW E9 range, the 2.5 CS, was a response to the 1973 oil crisis.

Known as the BMW New Six CS or as the E9, this group of cars was based on the New Class Coupes, yet designed to echo the styling of the New Six. Like the sedan, all New Six CS cars were fitted with different evolutions of BMW's M30 inline six engine.

The shape was deftly facelifted on a longer wheelbase to become the E9, launched as the 2800 CS in '68. At full capacity making mainstream saloons, BMW decided to have the low-volume coupés built by Karmann. The E9 CS was nicely finished and expensive - indeed, the 3.0 CSA cost more in the UK than an Aston Martin DBS or a Jensen Interceptor.

BMW Motorsport was established in early 1971 to develop an E9-based machine capable of winning the European Touring Car Championship (ETCC).
