BMW Generation E38 is the third generation of the BMW 7 Series luxury cars and was produced from 1994 until 2001. The E38 replaced the E32 7 Series and was produced with petrol and turbo-diesel straight-six and V8 engines, along with a petrol V12 flagship model. Three wheelbase lengths were available — short (i), long (iL) and Limousine (L7).

The E38 was the first 7 Series to offer diesel engines, with inline 6 and V8 options. The variants for the E38 were the 725tds, 728i, 730i, 735i, 740i, and the V12 powered 750i. Long wheelbase variants such as the 740iL and 750iL were also offered, including the extra-long wheelbase L7.

Hard on tyres. Afflicted by wide-ranging niggles and problems. Bore liners of early V8s can degrade. More 'modern' looking than predecessor. A bit bigger (16' 4" long by 6' 1" wide, but a lot heavier at 1,915kg for 740i. Better ride. Luxurious and capable. 193bhp 728i capable of 28-30 mpg.
