Back in the 1980s there was a company called Mid Engineering that sold plans for a Beetle replacement chassis that accepted the engine and trans from an Olds Toronado. These were primarily intended for the Kelmark kit car but were the same wheelbase as a stock VW floorpan.

I'm on the v8bugs.com forum where you can find a handle full of example and different ways to accomplish this, but I still have questions.
