The Indian Four was based on the Ace, a popular motorcycle designed by William Henderson in 1919. The Ace was powered by an inlet-over-exhaust inline 4-cylinder engine, with chain final drive. It was smooth and fast, but the company that built it had suffered serious setbacks.

This fine, fully restored Indian Four is on loan from Brenda Verschoore and is part of the special Indian history exhibition at the National Motorcycle Museum.

Where Harley used a V-twin for their offerings, the Indian used an inline 4-cylinder unit with a capacity of 77ci. Referred to as an F-head engine, it features overhead inlet valves and side exhaust valves. The engine design was inherited when Indian purchased the Ace Motor Corporation in 1927. The design remained unchanged until 1936.

The initial model, the Model 401, featured a 77 cubic inch (1,265 cc) engine with a three-speed transmission, showcasing a top speed of over 90 mph—an impressive feat for its time. The subsequent Model 402, introduced in 1929.
