The Indian Four was based on the Ace, a popular motorcycle designed by William Henderson in 1919. The Ace was powered by an inlet-over-exhaust inline 4-cylinder engine, with chain final drive. It was smooth and fast, but the company that built it had suffered serious setbacks.

With tens or thousands manufactured since the late 1960's by many manufacturers, the in-line four is a great smooth running design, just as it was some 80 years ago. This fine, fully restored Indian Four is on loan from Brenda Verschoore and is part of the special Indian history exhibition at the National Motorcycle Museum.

Where Harley used a V-twin for their offerings, the Indian used an inline 4-cylinder unit with a capacity of 77ci. Referred to as an F-head engine, it features overhead inlet valves and side exhaust valves. The engine design was inherited when Indian purchased the Ace Motor Corporation in 1927. The design remained unchanged until 1936.

The first Indian Fours were fitted with an engine that had been design by a man who died years before, he was one of America's great motorcycle engineering geniuses - a man who had developed two totally unique four-cylinder motorcycles in the 1910s which had claimed a slew of race wins and cross-continental speed records.

This 1936 Indian Four is probably one of the best remaining examples of the upside-down engine model. It was restored by Peter Bollenbach, who was known for the excellence of his classic Indian motorcycle restorations, and looks like it just came off the showroom floor. It will go up for auction at Mecum at the end of April.

While retaining the inline four-cylinder engine, the Indian Four underwent numerous enhancements and refinements. The initial model, the Model 401, featured a 77 cubic inch (1,265 cc) engine with a three-speed transmission, showcasing a top speed of over 90 mph—an impressive feat for its time. The subsequent Model 402, introduced in 1929.

The New Inline-4 Indian Indian released the Indian Ace Four a year later in 1928, before dropping the "Ace" name and going with the simpler name Indian Four from that moment till production ceased in 1942 as the American war effort ramped up.

After taking over Ace, Indian began using an inline-four engine without spending anything extra on its development. Funnily enough, Indian was soon bought by the industrialist E. Paul du Pont in 1930. Under du Pont, Indian was back on the track soon, and by the end of the decade, the profits were through the roof. The road ahead was looking.
