They're super fun with a manual. Toa answer your question the M240i will probably have better brakes and suspension than a non-M lite. The 3 and 4 series are pretty similar except one has two vs four doors. They'll be more practical than a 2 series, probably in line with a 1 series. (since they're wagons) So basically it's practicality vs fun.

The M240i had a large dead spot at the centre, and the steering didn't seem precise at all. Whereas the M340i steering was very much like the one on my 2015 228i.
