Getting oem paint from a shop, no clear, no thinner, just base coat, is somthing in the range of $500 to $1000 and can easily go much higher depending on the paint you choose. The real cost is in labor for prep. I'm currently in the process of preping my car for paint.

Absolutely, prep work is easily 90% the most important part of the job. I've heard that Maaco is actually a pretty decent Paint shop when you pay for a proper job. It's just the cheapo $399 or whatever job that is well known and made fun of for having bugs and runs and over spray. Not my experience.

Reputable body shops don't paint over ametur prep work. ~$200 at a econo-paint place by me. Everything I've heard leads me to believe that the cheap places will spray evenly and do good work - they just skim on the prep. Yeah that would save a lot of money.
