F4U Corsair vs. P-51 Mustang. Which was the better plane? The P-51 couldn't take off from a carrier from what I understand, which is why they didn't play a major part in the Pacific Theater. The P-51 was around before the Corsair, and I'm only guessing that it would have been replaced in Europe by the Corsair had it been superior.

According to the specs on Wikipedia, the Mustang (P-51D) had a top speed of 383 knots, and the Corsair (F4U-4) had a top speed of 388 knots. So top speeds are about equal. The P-51D's cruise speed was 315 knots and the F4U-4's cruise speed was not listed. Poking around, as you say, the Corsair's cruise speed was much lower.

Dont think there is much difference between the two as far as flying goes. The corsiar does have a nasty habit of rolling inverted and diving when stalling low and slow (called the corsair doe-see-doe). They both take off about the same. Both need to get the tail up pretty quick, then the ground handling is easier.

Overall, the P-51 was a much superior aircraft to the Corsair. Both aircraft had similar speeds, the Corsair being slightly faster at lower altitudes, the P-51 at higher ones. Both aircraft had good roll rates. The P-51 had the advantage in maneuverability at higher speeds and, did not suffer from a mixed bag of control surface performance.
