This engine starter cart was developed specifically for the SR-71 family of aircraft. It used two Buick V-8 racing car engines, linked together through a common gear box, to deliver power to the starter drive shaft of the aircraft engine. More than 600 hp from the two V-8 engines was required to "spool up" the J-58 to about 3,200 rpm for starting.

The J58 engines used in the A-12, SR-71, and YF-12A aircraft required an external starter, appropriately called a "start cart" (with the formal part number of "AG-330").
